just curious if you have an opinion on Flex 2.0 - is that of interest in your approach to game design? are there any features of that paradigm that are compelling?

[...] I’ve tried to break myself from this technology focus as evidenced by my recent forays into Flash and Game Maker. I’ve forced myself to step away from the 3D that I stare at all day (and arguably have the most expertise in) and limit myself to 2D technology. Even before then, I accepted the fact that I personally was not going to be crafting the next Doom or Source engine, so why participate in that age old arms race? I’ve also long accepted (and been very vocal about) the fact that technology really means zilch at the end of the day if the game isn’t finished. In other words, I am more impressed by a finished game running at 5fps than a tech demo running at 60fps. [...]

Wow, this is the most glowing recommendation of Flash ever. I too worked with Flash many years ago, but it just stank for game dev back then. If I ever dust off my personal game projects I'll have to give Flash another chance.

@Patrick: I'll be posting more details about how I work with it over the weekend.

@GBGames: The Flash 7 Player is available (and supported by Adobe/Macromedia) on Linux x86 (for Mozilla 1.2). Yeah, it's lagging a version, but let's be honest: Windows + MacOS = 98% of the computer game playing market. Sure, Linux support is great, but if it has to lag a bit then you can't really use it as an excuse (unless your goal is to specifically bring games to the Linux market). Most games don't cater to Windows 3.1 or MacOS System 7 anymore... Linux gamers are, sad though it may be, about the same size slice of the potential audience!

Flex 2.0: I've taken a glance at the beta a few times. Superficially, it appears to be more targeted at the needs of multi-tiered RIAs, which could certainly fit the model of some online games. I'm guessing that if you were interested in doing something like Traivan with Flash then Flex may be useful. The biggest reason I haven't jumped on that bandwagon yet is that the open source options aren't quite as fantastic... and like I said, I think it may be overkill for what I'm wanting. It does appear to have better UI functionality (it is targetted at RIAs), which could be useful if you had a UI-intensive game (Star Control for Flash?).

My only concern about Flash is the lack of support for platforms that aren't Windows or Mac. Ok, specifically it is Gnu/Linux, but Flash has always worked funny on it. The latest version won't come out until after the next iteration, and only after Windows/Mac versions are available.

On the other hand, it does sound like a great way to prototype some games ideas quickly. I will take a look into it myself...it's unfortunate that I am not going to be around this weekend, but it does sound like it could be a quick way to get something up and running easily.

Wow, I'm seriously considering doing prototyping with Flash, and possibly using it as a main framework. Thanks for the write-up!
